AGING

FINE LINES & WRINKLES

WHAT IS AGING

Aging is a natural biological process where cells gradually lose function, leading to visible and functional changes in the body. In the skin and face, aging typically manifests as:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Loss of volume (sagging cheeks, temples, under eyes)

  • Decreased elasticity

  • Uneven skin tone and pigmentation

  • Thinning skin

Aging can be categorized into two types:

  1. Intrinsic Aging – the natural, genetic process over time.

  2. Extrinsic Aging – caused by environmental and lifestyle factors, which we can often influence.

FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE

Intrinsic (Internal) Factors

  • Genetics: Your DNA affects how quickly skin loses elasticity or develops wrinkles.

  • Hormones: Decreases in estrogen, testosterone, and growth hormone affect skin thickness and firmness.

  • Metabolism: Slower cell turnover leads to duller skin over time.

Extrinsic (External) Factors

  • Sun Exposure (UV Rays): Leading cause of premature aging (“photoaging”), causing wrinkles, pigmentation, and loss of collagen.

  • Smoking: Accelerates aging by reducing blood flow and breaking down collagen.

  • Diet & Nutrition: Poor nutrition and excess sugar can damage collagen and elastin.

  • Stress & Sleep: Chronic stress and poor sleep increase cortisol, which degrades collagen.

  • Pollution & Toxins: Environmental toxins accelerate oxidative stress in the skin.
