PRP - PLATELET RICH PLASMA
WHAT IS PRP - HAIR RESTORATION?
PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) therapy for hair restoration is a non-surgical treatment that uses your own blood to promote hair growth. It involves drawing a small amount of your blood, processing it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting the PRP into the scalp in areas experiencing hair thinning or hair loss.
Involutional alopecia is a natural aging process where hair gradually becomes thinner. As we age, more hair follicles enter the resting phase, causing existing hairs to become shorter and less numerous.
Alopecia areata typically begins suddenly, leading to patchy hair loss in children and young adults. In some cases, it can progress to complete baldness (alopecia totalis), though for about 90% of those affected, the hair regrows within a few years.
Alopecia universalis is a more extreme form, where all body hair, including eyebrows, eyelashes, and pubic hair, falls out.
Scarring alopecias lead to permanent hair loss. This can occur due to inflammatory skin conditions or other disorders that cause scarring, which inhibits hair regeneration. Additionally, using hot combs or tightly styled hairstyles can also result in irreversible hair loss.
Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition that affects both men and women. Men with this condition, known as male pattern baldness, can begin experiencing hair loss as early as their teens or early 20s. This is characterized by a receding hairline and gradual thinning at the crown and front of the scalp. In women, known as female pattern baldness, noticeable thinning doesn’t typically occur until their 40s or later. The thinning is usually more diffuse, with the most significant loss at the crown.
Telogen effluvium refers to temporary thinning of the hair across the scalp, often triggered by changes in the hair growth cycle.
CONTRIBUTERS TO HAIR LOSS
Hormonal imbalances can contribute to hair loss in both men and women.
Genetics can increase the likelihood of hair loss in both genders.
Stress, illness, and childbirth may lead to temporary hair loss
Infections like ringworm can also result in hair loss.
Physical trauma such as burns, injuries, or exposure to X-rays can cause hair loss.
Autoimmune diseases, like alopecia areata, can trigger hair loss. In alopecia areata, the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles. In most cases, hair regrows, though it may initially be finer or lighter in color before returning to its normal texture and shade.
Dietary factors, such as a low-protein or iron-deficient diet, or severely restricted calorie intake, can also cause temporary hair loss. Other subtle nutritional deficiencies might contribute to hair loss as well and should be considered.
Certain medical conditions, including thyroid disorders, lupus, diabetes, iron deficiency, eating disorders, and anemia, can lead to hair loss. Typically, when the underlying condition is treated, hair regrowth occurs unless scarring is involved, as in some types of lupus, lichen planus, or follicular disorders.
Medications, including chemotherapy drugs, blood thinners, beta-blockers for blood pressure, and birth control pills, can lead to temporary hair loss.
Cosmetic practices such as frequent shampooing, perms, bleaching, and hair dyeing can weaken and damage hair, leading to thinning. Tight braids, rollers, hot curlers, and combing through tight curls can also cause breakage. These practices generally do not cause permanent baldness, and hair typically regrows once the damaging habits are stopped. However, excessive damage to the hair or scalp can sometimes result in permanent bald patches.
TYPES OF HAIR LOSS
HOW DOES IT WORK?
PRP is believed to stimulate hair follicles by increasing blood flow, promoting healing, and encouraging the growth of new hair. The growth factors in the platelets help in regenerating damaged tissue and can help revitalize hair follicles, leading to improved hair thickness and density.
The procedure typically involves the following steps:
Blood collection: A small sample of your blood is taken.
Processing: The blood is processed in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from other blood components.
Injection: The concentrated PRP is then injected into the scalp, focusing on areas with thinning or lost hair.
PRP therapy is often used to treat conditions like androgenic alopecia (male and female pattern baldness) and other types of hair loss. It is generally considered safe since it uses your own blood, reducing the risk of an allergic reaction.
However, multiple sessions may be required to see noticeable results, and the treatment's effectiveness can vary from person to person.
