PERMANIENT MAKEUP

WHAT IS PERMANENT MAKEUP?

Permanent makeup (also called PMU, micropigmentation, or cosmetic tattooing) is a cosmetic technique where pigment is implanted into the dermal layer of the skin using a tattooing method. The goal is to enhance features like the eyebrows, eyeliner, lips, and sometimes even to camouflage scars or recreate areolas after surgery.

BEFORE CARE

  1. 1. Stay hydrated.

  2. 2. Get plenty of rest the night before.

  3. 3. Gently exfoliate and moisturize the area (a few days before).

  4. 4. Eat a good meal before your appointment to avoid lightheadedness.

AFTER CARE

Alcohol, caffeine, and blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen) 24–48 hours before – they can cause excess bleeding.

  • 1. Fish oil, vitamin E, or niacin supplements (also thin the blood).

  • 2. Facials, peels, or harsh exfoliants on the area for at least a week before.

  • 3. Tanning or sunburns on the area.

  • 4. Botox/filler (wait at least 2–3 weeks before or after).

  • 5. Waxing or tweezing brows (for brow PMU) – let your artist shape them.

  • 6. If you’re getting lip blush: exfoliate your lips gently and use a hydrating balm in the days before. Consider an antiviral (ask your doctor) if you’ve ever had cold sores.

AFTERCARE (Healing phase: ~7–14 days)

Basic care:

  • Keep it clean & dry – gently wash with lukewarm water and fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry.

  • Apply aftercare ointment (your artist will recommend one, usually a healing balm or Aquaphor) as directed.

  • No picking, scratching, or touching – flakes are normal and part of the healing.

Avoid:

  • Makeup on the area until fully healed.

  • Heavy sweating (no gym, saunas, or steam rooms).

  • Sun exposure and tanning.

  • Swimming or soaking (pools, hot tubs, ocean).

  • Harsh skincare (retinols, exfoliants, acids) near the area.

PMU FAQs

    • Eyebrows: Typically lasts 1–3 years, depending on skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare.

    • Eyeliner: Can last 2–4 years.

    • Lips: Usually lasts 2–3 years.

    • Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP): Lasts 2–5 years depending on your skin type and sun exposure.

Touch-ups are generally recommended every 1–2 years to keep the color fresh.

  • Pain tolerance varies by person, but most people find PMU procedures manageable. The artist will apply a topical numbing cream to minimize discomfort during the procedure. Some areas, like the lips or eyeliner, may feel more sensitive, but it’s generally tolerable.

  • Yes, PMU is safe when done by a certified and experienced professional in a clean, hygienic environment. Always ensure that your technician uses sterile equipment and follows strict sanitation practices. Reputable artists will be licensed and trained in PMU application.

    • Eyebrows: After healing, you can wear makeup around them, but avoid makeup directly on the treated area for the first 7–10 days.

    • Eyeliner: You’ll need to avoid eyeliner and mascara for the first 7–10 days while your eyes heal.

    • Lips: Avoid lipstick or lip gloss for at least 5–7 days.

    • Scalp Micropigmentation: Don’t apply any products directly on the treated area for the first 7–10 days.

After healing, feel free to resume your regular makeup routine.

  • The term "permanent" is a bit of a misnomer. While PMU is designed to last for years, it fades over time due to factors like sun exposure, skin type, and lifestyle. Most PMU lasts between 1 and 3 years before needing a touch-up.

  • Like any tattooing procedure, there are risks, including infection, allergic reactions, and scarring. However, these risks are rare when performed by a certified and experienced artist. It’s important to go to a licensed professional and follow all aftercare guidelines.

  • If you’re unhappy with your PMU, there are removal options, but they can be more complicated and expensive than initial application. Methods like laser tattoo removal or saline tattoo removal can help fade unwanted pigment. You can also ask for corrective work if the shape or color isn’t right.

  • The length of a PMU treatment can vary, and 90 minutes is a general estimate. The actual time might differ based on factors like:

    1. Pain Tolerance: Some clients may need more time if they have a lower pain threshold or if additional numbing cream needs to be applied.

    2. Artist's Speed and Experience: A skilled and experienced artist might complete the treatment faster without compromising quality, while a less experienced artist may take a little longer to ensure precision.

    3. Area Being Treated: Certain areas, like eyebrows, may take less time than others, such as eyeliner or lips, which require more detailed work and precision.

    4. Client’s Skin Type: Skin condition and texture can affect how easily the pigment is absorbed, which might also influence the time taken to complete the procedure.

  • Yes, a touch-up is generally required 6 to 8 weeks after the initial procedure to refine the results and address any areas that may have faded.
